Ritucharya -Varsha Ritu

Varsha Ritucharya
Rain rain go away...come again another day......
This is what most Bangaloreans pray every time its likely to rain. Everyone is afraid of getting inflicted with cold, cough, fever, headache and so on. The rains takes away all the zeal especially from people who suffer from Asthma, Joint disorders, Arthritis, Psoriasis etc etc. Rains are supposed to bring happiness, joy and colors in our lives. We end up in falling ill. Why is it? Then How could our ancestors rejoice with celebrating series of festivals during this period??
Pondering over a solution for these, we realize that the answer is in understanding our relationship with our surroundings.
Understand your mother (nature) and obey her. This is what you can do to be healthy always.
Nature makes us realize its existence in different ways. One among the most important form is THE SEASON. Change over in seasons also brings significant changes in our body.  Ayurveda helps you understand what nature does to you and what you need to do to protect your health.
Let us have a brief description about the concept of Ritu and Ritucharya and then understand what and when for this season.

Ritu means Season and Charya means following. Ritucharya is the observance of diet and regimen according to the seasonal changes. In Ayurveda, a year is divided into 2 kaala or periods based on the apparent position of the sun in the north and southern directions. They are
  1. Uttaraayana - north and
  2. Dakshinaayana - south
Ayana means journeying. Uttaraayana is also called Aadaana kaala or the taking away period. The sun and wind are powerful during this period. The sun takes away the energy of the people. Due to the heat, air becomes hot and drains the cooling effect of earth. Due to this, we get dehydrated and weakened and the atmosphere becomes hot and dry.
Dakshinaayana is also called Visarga kaala or the giving away period. The moon becomes powerful during this period. The sun releases its energy to the people, the earth cools down due to cold winds and rain. People regain their strength and nourishment that was lost in the Aadaana kaala.
Each year consists of six Ritus or seasons. Each Ritu comprises of two Maasas or months and three such ritus constitute one kaala. Hence Aadaana and Visarga kaalas each consist of six months and three ritus.
The six ritus and their characteristics can be summarized in the following table:

Kaala (Semester)

Maasa (Month)
Characteristics of the Season

Varsha Ritucharya (Regimen during Rains)
Varsha in Sanskrit refers to Rain. In varsha Ritu, the water gets polluted due to rains. This is the season when humans are most prone to diseases. The water is heavy to digest. The atmosphere is cold and associated with dry winds. The agni (digestive activity) weakens further and gets vitiated by Vaata. Lack of sunshine as well as a cloudy atmosphere are uncongenial to health. Hence all methods to mitigate doshas and measures to enhance digestive activity should be adopted.
Effect on Dosha –  Increase in Vaata and Mild increase in Pitta.
Body & health condition during this season:
  • Low digestion power
  • Low immunity and
  • Low body strength
Certain types of food are good to have during rainy season and we need to restrict certain food and other habits.
Diet:
Food to have during rainy season:
Old grains, Old rice, Wheat, Barley, soup of pulses, thin supernatant water of curds, grape wine, honey.
Food having sour, sweet and salty taste.
An Ayurvedic drink made by adding a pinch of salt, pepper, long pepper and ginger is ideal to take . It helps to improve digestion power.
Food to avoid during rainy season:
  • Food that causes Vata and Pitta imbalance such as food having bitter, hot and astringent principles, potato, etc.
  • Food items that are heavy to digest.
  • Frozen food stuff, ice creams.
  • Oily food stuff
Health tips for rainy season:
  • Because it is not possible for out-door activities, you need to take special care to have indoor physical activities. Don’t let laziness grow on you.
  • Avoid Day-sleep
  • Ayurveda recommends every day sex is not ideal during this season.
  • Foot care for diabetics – Because the feet tend to get wet all the time, it is very important for everybody and especially diabetics to take a special foot care. As and when feet get wet, make sure to dry them immediately.
  • Similarly to avoid skin infections and itching, it is ideal to add 1 or 2 spoons of neem oil to half a cup of sesame oil and use this for massage before  hot water bath, at least once a week.
  • It makes sense to prefer hot water bath to cold water bath during rainy season. It helps to curb Vaata. Take luke warm water bath over your head. Do not let water stay on your head for log time.
  • Those who are prone to get joint pains and arthritis, better to avoid sitting or lying down on floor. Skin contact with a cold surface will cause tremendous Vata increase, leading to aggravation of pain.
  • It is better to wear footwear inside home during rainy season and in winters.
  • Cut your nails very regularly. Moisture between them, will invite infection.
  • Keep the body covered fully, do not wear sleeveless dress.
  • Dry hair as soon as you return home.
  • Hot water is better than cold water to drink.
  • Ayurveda recommends undergoing Panchakarma treatment during rainy season.
Do’s for this season:

Varsha Ritu (Rainy Season)
Diet
Lifestyle

Medicinal Rice – Unknown treasure

Rice is Asia’s most deeply revered treasure. Rice is life for thousands of millions of people. It is deeply embedded in the cultural heritage, spiritual, traditions and norms of Asians. Rice over the centuries has sculpted the culture and traditions of India.
We find information on rice culture covering the last 5000 years in Vedas, Samhitas, Puranas, Kautilya’s Arthasastra, Buddhist and Jain literature. Several references of its medicinal value in context of human health are made by Ayurveda Acharyas-  Charaka and Susruta. The uses of rice in traditional medicine are closely interwoven with its use as a food.

Karnataka too had host of medicinal rice varieties that were cultivated many decades back. The versatility in climate, soil, topography and method of cultivation in Karnataka has made the state a source of diversity in rice. There is still an ancient practice of utilizing paddy varieties for medicinal purpose in the state, though it has not been highlighted. Among the medicinal rice varieties, Karibattha, Kalame, Karikalave, Doddabaira nellu, Kari gajivili and Sannakki are some of the prominent varieties.

Karibatha grown in Varada river basin of Sagara and Soraba region, is used to cure cure Herpes (Sarpa suttu). Also this rice is pound and mixed with jaggery and consumed as a tonic to keep the body cool. For any other skin problems a paste is prepared using flour of Karibatha variety which is mixed with red soil and lemon juice and applied to the affected area. The specialty of this variety is it can grow despite being submerged in flood water for a month.

‘Kalame’ grown in coastal region of the state is highly tasty and is used in curing piles or haemorrhoids. This variety can be stored for a longer period ‘for older the paddy more is its medicinal value’. Karikalave is a special variety among the medicinal diversity and is specific to Gulbarga and Bidar regions. Usually pregnant women and mothers are not fed with rice. But in these regions there is a custom of feeding this particular rice variety as it has medicinal value and can control acidity and cold. As it has high calcium content this variety is consumed by nursing mothers.

Sannakki is yet another variety that has medicinal value and is used to cure Diarrehea in children. It is grown around areas of Sirsi and Mundagodu of North Canara District. The variety is highly fragrant and ideal for preparation of Biryani, Payasam and Kesari bath. ‘Athikarya’ is yet another oldest variety that finds references in our folk traditions. There is an old saying that the variety was considered a sacred crop, as the belief goes that the grains of this variety were held fist full during oath taking. This variety is also used for cure diarrhea .
Ambe more is grown in rainfed areas of Belgaum district by very few farmers. When cooked rice has a pleasant aroma and is very soft. Porridge made from this variety is given to sick people in villages. The dryland paddy variety ‘Dodda baira nellu ’ grown in Bangalore Rural and Kolar districts is popular for its curative values for various diseases. A traditional sweet ‘burfi’ is prepared by pounding the rice and extracting milk, to which jaggery is added. Rice of the same variety is used by adding curd for curing diarrhea. Karinellu is another variety of Kanakapura taluk, Bangalore district that is used as medicine for jaundice.

Saindhavaamritam

Saindhavaamritam
The Indus Valley (Sindhu Desha) is where the ancient Indian culture and civilization developed and the Salt Range of the Indus Valley is where Indians mined this salt thousands of years ago (Now the Hindu kush mountain range in Pakistan). The Salt Range lies between the Indus River and the Himalayan Range in the north of what is Pakistan today. The ancient Indians called the salt mined there as Saindhava lavana. That means Indus Valley salt or Indus Salt – the salt (lavana) from Sindh (Sindhu desha), the land along the Indus River – the Indus Valley.

The pleasant and invigorating effect of Saindhava lavana was known in India thousands of years ago already. Saindhava lavana was used with great success by Ayurveda, the science of a long and healthy life.
Saindhava is a salt, naturally occurring,it is same like the salt which we use in our kitchen, but that salt is a chemical salt,i.e.NaCl,which is harmful for us.

Saindhava lavana originated from the salt of the ocean hundreds of millions of years ago. It has been protected from environmental pollution by overlying rock layers to this very day. As we know, today’s oceans are polluted with heavy metals, toxic chemicals, radioactive contaminants and crude oil that has run out from ships, etc.. That is why the salt obtained from the sea is contaminated to a greater or lesser degree, depending on where it is extracted. By contrast, Saindhava lavana is uncontaminated and pure and contains 74 trace minerals.

Saindhava lavana is a pure natural product with no release agents, free-flow agents, bleaching agents or any other additives. Saindhava lavana was formed in the Cambrium era of geological history 500 million years ago. Other rock layers were deposited on salt from dried-up oceans and have sealed the salt to this very day. The salt has matured deep inside the earth for millions of years and developed into one of the most valuable foods on earth.
Mining

Saindhava lavana is an amorphous, light rock. When enough heavier rock layers are deposited on  the salt and exert pressure on it, it escapes into cracks and cavities and is even pressed up while the heavier rock layers sink. In the process, salt forms mighty vertical salt domes, the upper ends of which reach up almost to the surface of the earth. These enabled human beings to mine the salt thousands of years ago already. Saindhava lavana is mined, washed by hand and dried in the sun. It is mined in different parts of the world. The largest rock salt mine is The Khewra Salt mines, Pakistan.
The colours

Saindhava lavana can be red, white and clear. The red coloration is from the natural iron content. Fine pink coloured salt stems from chunks of red salt. The finer the granules, the lighter coloured the salt appears when light is refracted. Fine white salt stems from chunks of white salt. White salt comes from white rock, and pink salt from red rock. Clear granules are obtained from clear, cube-shaped salt crystals.

Saindhava Lavanam is sweet, carminative and digestive. It is light and lubricating. It improves taste. It is cooling and aphrodisiac. It is subtle (Sookshma) and penetrates quickly. It is good for the eyes. It checks the three Doshas.
Dose:- 10 to 30 grains as a digestive and 120 to 240 grains as an emetic (causes vomiting).
Action:- (“Vrishyam chakshushyam ruchyam deepanam thridoshaghnam pootam vrana vibandhaghnam” Raaja Nighantu.
Aphrodisiac, beneficial for the eyes,  improves taste perception, kindles the digestive fire, pacifies the imbalance of all the doshas, heals ulcers.
“Mriduseetaa veeryatwaat pittaharam” Sushruta-Sutra.Ch. 40).
It is pittahara due to its mridu sheeta veerya.

Cooling when compared with Samudra lavana (ocean salt), digestive, preservative and antiseptic.
When analyzed according to Modern Chemistry, it is said to contain sodium chloride, pottasium Iodate and different essential minerals.
Uses:- It enters into the composition of many medicines used as carminatives and digestives.
Externally, it is used as a lotion for washing bad ulcers. Saturated solution of salt in water is dropped into the eye on the opposite side in scorpion bite.
Why the Best?
Ayurveda has described mainly 5 types of salts viz, 1. Saindhava lavana 2. Sauvarchala lavana 3. Samudra lavana 4. Bida lavana 5. Audbhija Lavana. These all are elaborately mentioned in the texts of Ayurveda, but Saindhava Lavana is considered as best among all. Let us know why it is the best among all ??
Sindhu Salt or Saindhava Lavana is full of the health enhancing qualities and thus only it is considered as best among all. Bhavaprakash Nigantu has mentions its synonyms as Astri, Manimantha (That which is found on Manimantha mountain), Shita shiva ( which has soothing properties).
The taste of Saindhava salt is Sweet, Also it is having properties like Sukshma, Laghu, and Snigdha, having Sheeta virya, mitigates all the three doshas and having Cardio protective properties, Appetizing properties. It is useful in many of the sufferings like Vrana dosha(Ulcers),Mala stambha (constipation), Heart diseases etc.. Among all the five types of salt, only saindhava lavana is good for the eyes, heart and is aphrodisiac.
Saindhava salt also strengthens the bones and which increases the physical growth.  Many of the people use the Saindhava salt during the Upavasa(fasting).
The use of the sea salt is increasing now a days which results into the infertility, vision related problems. In such conditions, Saindhava salt has become the only option.
Saindhava salt is used as both 1.food article and 2. Medicine. It has also been mentioned as a great medicine due to its unique qualities.
